To be a Ingenua Libertina
Share
Every person holds the ability and the potential to be an INGENUA LIBERTINA (n., Spanish: naive libertine). It is an inner disposition, a stance that one adopts towards the world and life. Anyone can be an INGENUA LIBERTINA as many times as they want in a single day, and for as long as they wish. The prolongation of this state will depend, first, on will, and then, on practice. To begin, consider the following principles:
An INGENUA LIBERTINA:
- Intuitively understands that there are—and it's important to cultivate—other ways of relating to the world beyond order and reason.
- Defends their rituals of pleasure, play, and reverie. Leisure is a time that must resist the mandate of utility: a space to reclaim one's own imagination and exercise fantasy.
- Attempts, almost successfully, to fight their nihilistic impulses and solemn tendencies. At times, they manage to suspend disbelief. They resort to humor and mischief to resist the nightmares of chaos, weakness, and desolation.
- Understands that there is value in disobedience. Believes that we must, at least, question the limit; try a sensible dose of lucid and reflective transgression.
- Has compassion for themselves and for others. Understands that life on Earth can be absurd and cruel. We are unstable, restless, longing for affection and meaning. Respects escapist fantasies — the clumsy and naive ways we help ourselves live.
- Is capable of facing the strange and the unknown with curiosity and fascination. Practices intrigue. Exercises wonder.
- Strives to remain credulous and sincere, as if betrayal or punishment had never been known; indulgent and generous, as if shame or scarcity had never existed!
